Real Climate Action
The time is now. We cannot waste another four years with weak climate targets and virtual inaction. It's time to get serious about a new green economy today! The days of fossil fuels are done. A planned and orderly retreat from fossil fuels will ensure workers and communities are part of a just transition. All future public investments must be consistent with climate goals. Canada must step up as a global leader, not just in words and handshakes but in real climate action, for the sake of our children and the future of our communities! We commit to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, beginning with a 60% reduction from 2005 levels by 2030.
Good Green Jobs
In rebuilding our economy, we want to see good green jobs that really pay! With proper training and financial supports, workers in Northumberland-Peterborough South can benefit from jobs in renewable energy, green industry and in public works to revitalize our transportation systems and infrastructure. We must also invest in value-added and secondary manufacturing, keeping jobs in Canada making the goods we need. We also believe in investing in our local food systems, making sure green agriculture is a lucrative option for our farmers and supporting employment connected to our consumption.
Justice
For our society to work, it must be a safe and just place for us all. We believe in protecting the rights of all our community members, without exception to gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, education, occupation or any other identities and roles in our society. We must make progress together. In particular, Indigenous peoples across Canada have waited too long for justice. Truth, justice, and reconciliation must be at the core of our post-pandemic recovery and transition to a green economy. Indigenous sovereignty must be respected.
Universal Basic Income
It is time to transform our social safety net to meet the demands of our transformed society. Greens have pressed for Universal Basic Income for years, long before it was taken seriously by the other parties. We will introduce a universal payment set at a level that fits each region’s specific cost of living, with the built-in incentive to continue working and earn more. The benefits of this approach have been visible to us all during the pandemic, helping families to weather the economic fallout of lockdowns and is especially important in rural communities like Northumberland-Peterborough South where thousands of children and elderly live below the poverty line. As we transition to a new green economy, we will make sure no one is left behind!
